Video Part #006

Justin Strubing – Foundation Art Bars Subtitles and Seagulls

Justin Strubing – Foundation Art Bars Subtitles and Seagulls

Foundation really raided the Scrabble board for the title of their video.

For me, Art Bars Subtitles and Seagulls signalled Foundation’s last flirt with representing a pot pourri of alternative styles before settling for the hesh over fresh look in later years. Daniel Shimuzu, Jon West, Ethan Fowler, Kris Markovich, Mike Rusczyk, Justin Roy, Judd Hertzler and Omar Salazaar are a smorgasbord of handrails, hippie jumps and hairball antics. In amongst this moshpit of mayhem is Justin Strubing, the bohemian breakbeat to Foundation’s grunge set.

Justin grinds farther, slides longer, flies higher than most. His style is similar to a sling shot, firing high speed tricks and lines with deadly precision yet maintaining an ultimately fun disposition. The fully extended ollie over the sidewalk and railing into a perpendicular handicap ramp that forces Justin to powerslide immediately after touching down is a great example of his hellbent insouciance.

The shapes Justin makes as he frontside boardslides a jersey barrier or pops out of long bluntslides are magnificent. The Serge Gainsbourg inspired drum beat and guitar solo marinate the flavour of Justin’s part like a homely dish of french cuisine. While the rest of the Foundation team is serving up ready meals, Justin’s trick delection is straight out the oven.
