I discovered a new online game the other day via Arte which is unlike anything else I’ve ever played because it’s real. Fort McMoney is an interactive experience that takes us on a journey to Fort McMurray in Alberta Canada where the omnipresent oil industry makes and breaks society. Your role is to discover the city, talk to the locals and decide what you believe the future should be for a region the size of Florida that’s both plagued and blessed with one of the world’s largest oil reserves. I had already heard about the oil sands of Alberta a few years ago via a brilliant Vice series Toxic Alberta which investigated the environmental cost of extracting oil from sand and the communal cost that comes with lots of disposable income and little to do in town.
